She never asked for more than she deserved. And she rarely asked for all she deserved. And yet she was content with what she had.
She never cared that she’d grow old and I wouldn’t. she joked that it was perfect justice for an old, eccentric artist to have a handsome younger lover, that it would prove her mind and body were still alert and strong.
She always feared for my life, never hers. She kept me sane when others would have fled. She understood me without the benefits of immortality.
And she died…
Because I couldn’t keep her safe.
