“The Gift”

The wrapping was simple: A plain rich red paper, blood red in fact, beribboned in gold and silver. The matching card bore only the words “Happy Yule” and my name, written in his distinctively masculine scrawl.
It was exquisite in its simplicity, and I was loath to ruin its appearance. And yet my curiosity got the better of me.
Carefully, slowly, so as not to ruin the moment, I loosened knots and unstuck tape before I was able to push aside the plain white tissue paper inside to reveal a small wooden box.
Empty.
“Full,” he said. “With my heart.”
