Author's Notes: So this started originally as smut for Alex and Rachel. And surprise, surprise, it didn't end up that way. I still can't believe that my girls have become my shmoopy, romantic couple, especially Rachel! It boggles my mind. But I love it at the same time. I got the birthstones info from the Bernardine Fine Art Jewelry site. I was basically right from memory, but needed the backup to be safe.

Dedication: My muses, for always pulling through for me, even if it takes some time…

"Silver Band"

(11-12-01)

Tonight's the night. I already know that Alex has been cleared for…amorous activities. In fact, the minute she got cleared, she gave me one of those kisses. Didn't leave anything to the imagination as to what she wants. Hell, the doctor was teasing us about more kids if we could pull it off. There's no doubt in my mind that Alex has been missing our intimacies. I know I have. And if it weren't for the fact that she had a meeting with Nick and the Legacy lawyers, we'd have been making up for lost time already.

So here I am, carefully moving around the bedroom so I don't disturb Rose's nap. Alex isn't quite able to move the baby into her nursery yet, but that'll change tonight. Alex has been even more touchy-feely since she got pregnant and had our Rose Marie. And that's saying a lot, considering how friendly she's always been with me.

First things first. I need to pull out the satin sheets. The ones Alex bought in one of her attempts to seduce me. She's been hinting at replacing them, but I just don't have the heart to do it. These sheets have done well for us. In fact, Rose was conceived on these sheets. Well, as far as I'm concerned she was. In no time, I have the bed stripped of its functional Egyptian cotton sheets. I sprinkle a blend of lavender and verbena on the mattress pad before fitting on the blue satin sheets and the faux sheepskin blanket. The beeswax candles we bought on our last trip to Vancouver come out next, set strategically around the room, including one for the oil warming dish. More candles surround the tub, ready to be filled for our bathing pleasures.

I start to pull out the matching negligees Alex bought, and then change my mind. We won't need any sort of clothing tonight. Kat's going to stay the night with her friend Sasha. Thankfully, she won't cause any hesitation on our part tonight, for I intend to make Alex a very, very happy woman tonight.

"Rachel?"

"In the kitchen," I call out, pulling the salmon out of the oven.

Alex is frowning as she comes into the room, which means she's fighting a headache. Obviously the meeting didn't go well, and her next words don't surprise me at all. "Where's the baby?"

"In the nursery," I reply gently, moving around the island to grab for her coat and briefcase. "Napping like she's supposed to."

"I'm going to go--"

"No, you're not, sweetheart," I interject quickly. "She's down for the count, and you are far too upset right now to be disturbing her." She starts to protest, but I stop her with a quick kiss. It doesn't take long for Alex to start responding with a sexy moan. She pulls me close, rubbing against me in ways I haven't felt in a while. When she leans back to suck in a deep breath, I chuckle huskily. "Feeling better yet, love?"

"I'm not sure," is her coy answer. "I was pretty upset from the meeting. Not to mention missing you and Rose." She pauses, glancing at the clock. "Is Kat home yet?"

"She's spending the night at Sasha's, so it's just you and me tonight."

"And Rose." Her eyes turn toward the steps.

"And Rose." Letting the salmon cool, I grab Alex's hand and pull her along behind me as I head up to the bedroom. I pass up our room to let her see for herself that Rose is happily, sleepily sucking on her thumb. Alex fusses with fixing her blanket for a moment before turning to face me again, desire and weariness warring for dominance in her eyes. "Nick wants me to head up the recovery aspect of the excavation team out on the island. He had to bring it up again today of all days." She stops to take a deep breath, lets it out shakily, and blinks back a few tears.

Nick needs to learn tact, if you ask me. But I don't voice the thought. Alex knows how I feel about this situation and the Legacy, we don't need to start arguing over this again. "Come on, love," I reply instead, gently dragging her into our bedroom. I can see by the look on her face that she understands what I've done in the bedroom. I begin to remove the clothes that make up her armor for dealing with Nick and the aftermath of the explosion. Each swath of skin uncovered is kissed or stroked reverently, and I do my damnedest to make sure Alex knows how much I adore her. "Bath or massage?" I murmur once she's naked, nipping at her earlobe.

"You mean I can't have both?" she pouts prettily, tracing a finger down my chest.

"Minx!" I chuckle, swatting at her as she scampers into the bathroom with a girlish giggle. When I hear the water turning on, I start pulling off my own clothes and head in to join her. Good memories are what this day needs, to balance out the negative ones neither of us can completely shake.

There are long, lazy kisses as we wait for the tub to fill, and teasing caresses that I haven't felt in far too many months. Nibbling my way to her collarbones, I take special care to stroke all of her hot spots. This is about my dear Alex's pleasures and sensations today, not mine. We ease into the steamy, lemon and mint scented water, and I begin a slow, tender exploration of her body, easing her into her first shuddering orgasm.

"Feeling better, love?" I murmur as Alex nuzzles in closer. The sensation of her smooth, oiled skin rubbing against mine under the satin sheets is enough to make me want to go another round. Her sleepy, satisfied yawn makes me reconsider.

"Mm-hmm. Thank you." She grows quiet for a moment, long enough that I wonder if she's fallen asleep. "I love you, Rachel. I don't think I tell you that enough."

"Of course, you do. Every day and every interaction we have, not to mention the little girl sleeping in the other room." I pause for a moment and shift to get out of the bed. I can feel Alex's eyes on me as I move to pull something out of the back of our closet. "I was going to save this for your Christmas present, but I've changed my mind."

Alex sits up and accepts the small box from me, curiosity written plainly on her face. "What is it?"

"Open it," I whisper, suddenly uncertain of how she'll accept this gift. Am I wrong to give it to her today? Should I have waited until Christmas like I'd originally intended?

With shaking fingers, she lifts the lid and pulls out the ring inside. I'd searched for weeks prior to Rose's birth to find the right design for what I wanted to do. In the end, I had the ring custom made. Four stones cut in dainty heart shapes and inset in a silver band, points alternating up and down: diamond, dark yellow topaz, amethyst, and a pale white opal with just a hint of pink.

"This is beautiful, Rachel," she says, holding up the ring to view it in the candlelight. "But why these stones?"

"I was planning to give this to you for Christmas," I begin slowly, shifting to sit next to her again. "I wanted to ask you to take our vows in February. I know it won't be the twenty-ninth for a couple more years again, but it's the thought that counts, right?" When she nods, I can see the tears beginning to glitter in her eyes. "I got the idea near the end of your pregnancy, something like a mother's ring, but more than that. So I picked the four most important life-changing events in our lives together to pick the stones."

She stares at the ring for a moment, and I can see the wheels turning in her head as she processes the stones and what their significance could mean. "Well, the opal's obvious. That's Rose's birthstone. And the others?"

I stroke her cheek, forcing her to meet my gaze. "Would you rather I just tell you?" When she nods, I smile. "The diamond represents the month I lost Patrick and Connor, as well as the month I joined up with the Legacy, which brought you into my life. The topaz? That signifies today's date. And the amethyst? Well, I already mentioned that one. We got together in February, remember?"

A tear slips down her cheek as she hands me the ring. "Will you-- Will you actually ask me? Make it official?"

Slipping off the bed, I kneel in front of her and reach for her hand. "Alex, my dear sweet Alex, you are the best thing that's come into my life since Patrick and my children. After Patrick died, I never thought I'd find anyone that would make me feel whole again. Until you came along. Oh, I fought it for years, but losing the castle, losing Derek, and seeing how that affected you? I realized that it was stupid to fight it, but I wasn't sure you were ready. And when I went to see you in Baton Rouge, when you told me you were ready, I knew it was an important step in our relationship. And I don't regret a single minute of our lives together since then." I clear my throat as I rest the ring at tip of her finger. "Today is a day that has horrific memories for both of us. It needs a good memory to balance them out, and I would think that being asked to be my wife would be a good one, don’t you? So, Alexandra, would you do me the honor of becoming my wife, my partner for life?"

"Yes," she whispers raggedly. "Oh god, yes!" I no more than slip the ring on her finger and she's pulling me up into a kiss that defies explanation. "I love you, Rachel," she murmurs over and over between kisses, never letting up on her hold on me.

"I love you, too, Alex, now and always."
